Passion in your dream is vital. We are all excited in the beginning of a new venture, an opportunity of product marketing, and that energy can get you through the getting-off-the-ground phase of dreaming. Then the reality of what it means to “work” your dream sinks in and some of that initial excitement gets buried.
Speaking of excitement…
How is your DailyFeats Big Dream Challenge going?
For those of you who have hung in there through my excuses, updates, and everything in between, I get to share my victory today. One of the reasons we wanted to partner with DailyFeats is the way they put together a challenge.
There is a time frame, even with a handy countdown everytime you view your challenges. It may not always feel like it, but this is a good thing.
How many of us put off what we need to do until we HAVE to?
A countdown timer can either completely stress me out, or spur me into action. In this case it’s knowing that you dear dreamer, will be looking at us to see how we are doing. This added pressure support got me to the next phase of my project, For Your Adornment [link]. I talked about making a decision last week in my post “Pick Your Goal For The Dream Big Challenge” that confirmed the direction of the site.
Deadlines are very handy for this, which is why my For Your Adornment site went from “coming soon” to actual product listings in the last few weeks!
The BIG stepping stone to getting this done – schedule it. Seriously, put a specific task on your calendar. For months, my almost daily calendar reminder read a very uninspiring and generic:
- For Your Adornment Products
Too generic. Of course I had to add products, but every time I would login to get that done, the reality of how much I needed to prep BEFORE adding products was painfully evident. And nothing got done.
The major change between that scenario and the one that worked?
Now my calendar items read more like this:
- Set up categories
- Set up shipping
- Set up tax rates
Teeny-tiny bites off the bigger whole. Every time I remember this concept in my dreaming task list, it reminds me of the Shel Silverstein poem “Melinda Mae”.
Have you heard of tiny Melinda Mae,
Who ate a monstrous whale?
She thought she could,
She said she would,
So she started in right at the tail.
I work full time now as most of you probably do too, which is why I know you will understand this next statement.
There are days when I just don’t want to.
You come home, cook, do the dishes, clean up and POOF! It’s 9:00 p.m. again, and you haven’t worked on your dream. This is the phrase that my brain coughs up day after day when I hit this time of night.
It’s already 9:00? Well, I’m not starting anything NOW!
How stupid is that? It’s dark, and you feel that pull to sit on the couch and chill out. Maybe read, or watch something ridiculous to make you laugh. Do this… you have to spend time with your family.
But have you noticed that a night like this can turn into a week, then a month, then a year?
I’m not suggesting you to burn the candle at both ends, but one night a week, light a candle under your own butt and spend the 2+ hours that you would of in front of the TV doing something you love, a passion, a dream.
Spread it out
That is how this dreamer got my jewelry site back up and running. There was no magical space of time where I had no distractions and plenty of sleep so I could merrily add items and upgrade everything on the site.
It’s just today for a little bit of time. I bet you can find a little bit of time today for your dream too.
Don’t forget to throw in a little dream victory celebration too
