Why Stephen King Makes For a Bad Bed Partner
One of the things about Mr. King’s writing that makes sleeping difficult is his humor.
As I mentioned in a previous post “Reading, Writing and Belly Laughs” the man has an amazing talent that can take you from scared silly to laughing hysterically in one sentence. The problem is every time you start to drift off that funny line pops back in your head.
You start out trying to be quiet about it so you don’t disturb the person next to you. But eventually you can’t hold it in anymore and you start to sound like you are trying to hold your breath and blow your nose at the same time. Give up, it is less annoying to just laugh and get it out of your system – if you can.
Another of his talents is a little scarier but mostly annoying. He has the ability to crawl inside your head, find a comfortable place to hang out and then just wait patiently. He sits quietly waiting for the perfect opportunity to remind you he is there. This usually occurs when you are trying to shut your brain off enough to fall asleep.
You lay there quietly, perfectly still, taking deeper and deeper breaths as you feel your body relaxing with that weightless, floating feeling and then BOOM. There he is poking and prodding you psyche stretching your imagination until you start seeing things you never knew you were capable of thinking better yet conjuring into a picture.
This is the kind of writer I want to become. Someone who invades your thoughts long after you finish the book. I want to be the kind of writer who can enable her readers to explore all areas of their mind, even those darker places, while still tickling their funny bone.
This is my challenge. This is my dream.
Until next week,

Nice post, thanks.
It just gets better and better with you…
Great post! You are well on your way of getting in my head… the latest on KillerYarns.com helped creep me out perfectly!
I have nightmares without reading scary stuff, but I will get around to reading the latest from KillerYarns.com! I’ll have my daughter read it, she loves scary movies. I couldn’t even handle The Grudge. Gave me the creeps all night! But you’re right, the news is pretty damn scary.
I have not read a Stephan King book since I was a teen. My son discovered him on our last trip to Mexico almost five years ago. We ended up making multiple trips to the library and he has read almost all of his books. I remember thinking he had a great sense of humor and just like you would get those strange haunting thoughts after the lights were out. I am looking forward to reading your stories. Wendy
He does creep to your head and likes to stay there. I like how you put reading King books into words.
