What Is The Best Way To Be Re-inspired?

Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite holiday.

I’m amazed at how long the day seems to drag on and on, and then all of a sudden we eat and then we’re full and tired and can’t keep our eyes open.

I’m sensing a very short entry this week – and not just because I’m in a Tryptophan induced food coma, but for the past few weeks, I’ve been totally uninspired to work on any of my goals, especially my dream of  having a photography career.

So as I sit here in the dark with a fire and some tea, here are the things that are on my mind:

  • Pie
  • The fact that I haven’t picked up my camera in almost 3 weeks
  • The feeling like I’m avoiding next steps to get some prints ready for hanging in a local Doctor’s office and I’m not sure why
  • The sense that not even the football game on TV will keep me awake long enough to write something meaningful or to eat pie

I have noticed that when I get behind, or know that I’m procrastinating I’m really hard on myself.  It feels like deliberate self sabotage.

Consciously I know that it’s unproductive, and if a friend were telling me these things and asking for help, I’d say something like “its ok, you’ll get back on track, you’ll find the right balance and get re-inspired.”

But I’m harder on myself than I would be with others, and I’ve always been like that.

Has this ever happened to you?

It’s never my first reaction to ask for help – and I’m bumping up against some major comfort zone issues.  So I’d appreciate any thoughts -

How do I get back on track and get re-energized about my goals?

And “more pie” can’t be your answer ‘cause I already tried that.

  1. I find and list the good reasons for continuing on my goals and sometimes I look for other forms of motivation.

    Sometimes that other form of motivation is a picture of my son. I ask myself what kind of example am I being as a parent. Am I asking him to do homework whether he feels like it or not – to be a success in school?

    How would he feel if I gave up on this goal? What message would that send to him?

    Sometimes motivation can be a potential reward. Like with the Doctors office showing – if you sold 3 pictures what could you spend the money on? Make it something other that bills that you have been denying yourself.

    Maybe even look at the Doctors office as just a tiny step towards a bigger goal – make it less important – more like just a necessary step on your way to taking photographs for [fill in the blank].

    And finally recognize your progress to date. I know you have that photography group and you sold a photo, plus joined 8 Women Dream – think of all that you have done to date.

  3. I think it’s hard to focus on anything during the holidays, besides the holidays. That’s what New Years Resolutions are for! But we can keep on trying.

    Remy, I can relate to the procrastination problem. I still struggle and one of the ways I get myself moving is to set up a working date with a friend. That way I have a time and a person depending on me.

    I’m with Wendy – I have partners who help me stay on track – a writing “buddy” I correspond with weekly to be sure we’re both still steadily making progress on our books, and a daily accountability partner with whom I share my daily goals.

    Lately, I am making an effort to take a look at my “big picture” goals several times during the week – better yet, daily! (not there yet!) to remind myself of what is really important to me.

    I do think tracking and congratulating ourselves for the progress we have made is always more effective than beating ourselves up for what we haven’t done – been there, done that, trust me, but I find that I *do* more and feel better when I can remind myself of all I have accomplished and ease up on myself for not “being there” (wherever “there” is?) yet.

    We’re all works in progress – just keeping taking small steps forward toward your goal when you can, reward yourself for each one and know that we are always here cheering you on!
