How To Wobble and Not Fall Down

A banner week on the For Your Adornment front. A funky and chunky necklace that is mixed media – glass, wire and crocheted yarn – is the newest addition. I finished a book this past week and managed to still get out of bed and deliver my son to his (almost) last week of school despite being sick.

Yeah for the flu! Or cold. Whatever hit me this last week has been interesting and probably a long time coming. It’s been a while since I felt run over by a truck. I have to say that the productivity goes completely out the window when your skin hurts, and updating a web site is so totally not on the top of your list. So what do you do when you can’t breathe through your nose and you’ve killed 3 boxes of tissue in 5 days? Here’s a quick synopsis of how I handled my un-planned down time:

  • Turned on my Mac laptop and watched the light on the latch ‘breath’ at me until I nodded off.
  • Watched 3 episodes of the 1st season of “Heroes” back-to-back. I napped a few times so the next time I watch, it will still be a surprise.
  • Complained to my husband 28 times. He was getting over his cold and might say the count is higher so don’t ask him.
  • Tried to keep my son focused on the last dregs of homework to see if we can possibly squeak out one more “C” on his report card.
  • Our motorcycles came back from the shop and I’m too sick to even take mine down to fill up the tank. Sneezing in your helmet is not pretty.

One accomplishment this past week I can share, and recommend, is the book “The Descendant” by Masheri Chappelle.  It was sent to 8 Women Dream from Itasca Books in an Advance Readers Edition – something I have never seen before.  I agreed to be the first to read it.

I have to say I had a slight reservation in starting this book. I think it was a synopsis on the back jacket that gave me pause. I have some disbelief regarding past life experiences. I totally believe that we come back, just not that we can remember. I bit my tongue and opened the book to a truly enticing story of several generations of women who suffered quite a bit through the years. The story was upsetting at times, mainly due to the crap that history shows us is true in the treatment of slaves and the integration of African-Americans into society that amazingly still has issues. I was captured by the strength and weaknesses of the characters, and found myself rooting for them to succeed in whatever way they could. I do recommend it as a great read that had just a touch of the supernatural – enough for me to deal with.

Yeah, you sound like you have the most terrible cold, but you’re as chipper as ever! I would just want to crawl into bed. At least you got to relax and read a book!

I was sent a copy of the Descendant as well and have to say the story really grabbed me. I, like you, was a bit hesitant at first because of the supernatural aspect… the interruptions from the unborn Penny were sometimes distracting and confusing, but all in all I liked the story. I loved the history and the insight into the characters lives. After finishing the book I wanted more. I hope Ms. Chappelle’s book does well and a final version is released. I also hope to see the story continue and the trilogy complete.
