Dreaming Backwards

Dreaming Backwards: Iman Woods in 1998 with friend Amelia

It seems my dream to show women they’re beautiful started long before I become a professional photographer. To keep myself grounded on my dream journey, I try to take time to reflect on how far I’ve come. It’s SO easy to reach a milestone and then focus on the next stage. Dreaming backwards helps you see how seemingly unconnected things are actually part of the journey.

My junior year of high school was spent in France with my dad. I went to an incredible bilingual international baccalaureate school. It was small, but it was advanced and I loved the fast pace.

I’ve reconnected with a few friends from there and got a message from Amelia that she’d found some old pictures in her parents’ house. She said it was her first (and last) glam shots and that she remembers me choosing the backdrop and telling her to look soulful. I laughed so hard when I read that.

I’d forgotten that we’d even taken them. It had been a sleepover at Coral’s house and we did our hair and makeup and then took pictures that I was really proud of.

Coral’s mom was very knowledgeable about skin care (and breathtakingly beautiful) and I do believe she started my obsession with taking care of my skin.

It’s incredible how one year of your life can stay with you forever.

And for me personally, it’s comforting to know I’d been on this dream path long before I knew I was actually on a path.
