Avoid Fear To Reach Your Dream Fitness Goals

Getting fit means something different for everyone, but you can take a big leap toward your dream fitness goals if you overcome fear that gets in the way. Fear stops us from trying new things, taking a step into the unknown. Gaining strength with these basic exercises builds your confidence to overcome the fear.

Dream fitness goals come in all shapes and sizes. Just like we do.

Fitness can encompass carrying a load of groceries up a flight of stairs without getting winded. It can mean marathons or the goal of adding muscle definition. What makes fitness amazing is that there are so many fears to be  overcome no matter what your fitness goals are. From getting started on the dream fitness path, to trying something completely new, fears can limit our dreams.

One fear I ran into while starting my own dream fitness is the fear of getting hurt. This is fairly common and after seeing how other gym goers attack their workouts, I can understand why.

I would love to offer you a magic wand that will magically put you in your best shape. The reality is that it’s going to take some work. Doing that work will give you an amazing amount of confidence. These exercises build that confidence, one movement at a time.

One thing I love about fitness is that the work you do goes beyond your time in the gym, and extends to everything we do in life.

Here are just a few exercises you can do anytime that will help you overcome the fear in your dream fitness goals.

Squat

I never really understood the appeal of this oh-so-unattractive move until I started doing them myself. If you think about it, we need to perfect this movement if for no other reason that most of spend a ton of our daily lives squatting to get in and out of chairs.

The trick is do do this movement right. Plant both feet shoulder width apart, wight on your heels. Pop your booty back, and bend at the knees. Keep sitting in an invisible chair behind you until your thighs are as close to parallel to the floor as you can get, then stand it back up.

Lunge

This single leg exercise movement steps one leg forward to bend while the other leg remains stationary. It is also the most deceptively difficult movement to master.

Keeping your abs tight by sucking your belly button into your spine is vital anytime you are adding a balancing act to an exercise. This is one that take a while to get right. The trick is to figure out just how long a stride you need to keep your balance and stay in the right form.

Yes, I will share a video with you. I really want you to get these down! Lunges will make a huge difference in both your leg strength and flexibility.

Push Up

You are pushing a lot of things around in your life. Pushing a heavy object overhead to put it away on that high shelf in the cabinet, or just getting yourself back up off the ground. Pushing movements are used in our lives everyday.

A while back I shared my own search for the perfect push up. I may have ranted a few times about how this is an amazing exercise for women. I will hold back my rant today, but will share the video I did.

And I’m still working on my perfect push up.

Find your strength, find your fitness goals.

The illusion of fear and limits can be really strong. Just because I couldn’t do more than one real squat a few year ago doesn’t mean I can’t today. You never know what you are capable of until you try.

  • I look at the squat like I look at the downward dog in yoga: I have never liked it. But recently I found out that it is good for strengthening your knees and now I have to take a second look at it…damn.

    • Ha! Yep – I used to look sideways at everyone at the gym squatting like they were nuts. All those little muscles around the knee love to do this to get strong :)
