Positive Thursday: Do You Ever Feel People Expect You to Be Happy?

Stop Living Down to Expectations

Good morning! I hope you are all enjoying your Positive Thursday so far.

Do you ever feel that people expect you to be happy?

Expect you to be a certain way?

To feel a certain way?

To act a certain way?

I’ve been feeling overwhelmed by these feelings this week; and starting today – I’m going to put an end to it.

I was reading fellow dreamer Lisa’s post, How to Live Big Dreams Through The Ups and Downs of Life from earlier this week and feeling very inspired. I’ve never met Lisa is person, but gotten to know her through both of us writing for 8WD.

I feel like we have a lot in common – and oddly enough, it seems like we had pretty similar weeks.

We both had weeks that were full of ups and downs. The highest of highs and lowest of lows. Lisa was facing unexpected emotions when visiting an old favorite spot, I’ve been facing unexpected expectations from other people.

I love some of her “life advice!” Lisa wrote:

  1. Choose happiness as the path, rather than the destination. Choose to be happy now!
  2. Take baby steps toward your dreams.
  3. Reward yourself for the progress made along the way.
  4. Remember that this is “just life,” and life is an experiment and an adventure.
  5. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes!
  6. And have fun!

And I’m adding to her list – Stop living down to expectations.

Maybe part of these expectations are coming from me doing the same routine, day in and day out. Wake up, get ready, commute, work, commute, go running, make dinner, catch up on blogs, bed. The end. Start over x 5 days a week. It’s starting to feel too expected. I’m not only facing expectations from other people – but from my own routine.

While I can’t control what other people expect from me or think about me, I can change what I expect from myself.

And [see the above image!] that’s just what I did last night – I chose to stop running for the night and instead get a library card and check out some books. I decided to take a break from staring at my computer screen and start finishing some art projects.

And I’m hoping to break the routine this weekend as well and start living life out of the box. I’m also embracing Lisa’s fabulous mindset and approach at life: I choose to live my life with great gusto and great love.

    I think it’s great that you don’t have to be happy all the time. I find people who seem too happy annoying. I’d rather know people who are funny.

  • That is so weird that you are trying to break routines this week. There may be something in the air. My husband and I are in desperate need of this, and family or financial obligations have made this next to impossible for months.

    So we changed our expectations. Hell, it may only be a trip to Home Depot on a Monday night, but if we got out of the house, it’s a change!

  • William Shakespeare wrote, “Expectation is the root of all heartache.”

    It’s difficult to be happy all the time. I think it’s better to strive to be calm most of the time … like a boulder in the middle of a stream … not being pushed in any direction.

    The Third Noble Truth in Buddhism teaches that true happiness and contentment are possible if we are willing to give up our “useless cravings” and live each day in the present moment — not spending our days thinking of the past or focusing on the imagined future. It is only through living in the present does one become happy and free.

    I think we often look for happiness outside of ourselves. An example I might use is let’s say that swimming in a lake makes me very happy, so it would stand to reason that If I think that swimming in the lake makes me happy that if I did more swimming in the lake I would become even more happy (so my happiness would become greater the more I swam). But happiness doesn’t work this way — yet we treat it like it does.

    We think that the swimming in the lake gives us happiness, but maybe the reason we are happy swimming in the lake is because while we are there we remain in the present moment observing everything we like about being at the lake. We then forget to do this in our everyday lives.
